Rating for Instagram: Good (4.00% rate by followers).
Platform benchmark bands are rough guides that vary by industry, audience size, and post format.
How It Is Calculated
- Total Engagements = Likes + Comments + Shares + Saves
- Average per Post = Total Engagements / Number of Posts
- Engagement Rate by Followers = (Average Engagements per Post / Followers) × 100
- Engagement Rate by Reach = (Total Engagements / Reach) × 100
- Engagement Rate by Impressions = (Total Engagements / Impressions) × 100
Worked example
An Instagram account with 10,000 followers publishes a post that gets 300 likes, 40 comments, 20 shares, and 40 saves. Total engagements = 300 + 40 + 20 + 40 = 400.
Engagement rate by followers is (400 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 4.00%, placing it in the Good tier (3–5%) for Instagram. If the post reached 5,000 unique accounts, the engagement rate by reach would be (400 ÷ 5,000) × 100 = 8.00%.

Engagement Rate Questions, Answered
What is social media engagement rate?
Engagement rate measures how actively people interact with your content relative to your audience size or reach. Interactions typically include likes, comments, shares, retweets, and saves. It provides a clearer signal of content resonance than follower count alone, because a large audience that ignores your posts generates little business value.
What is the difference between engagement rate by followers and by reach?
Follower-based rate divides your interactions by your total follower count, showing how active your overall audience is. Reach-based rate divides interactions by the unique accounts that actually saw the post. Reach-based rate is often considered more precise because organic algorithm delivery rarely shows your post to 100% of your followers.
What is considered a good engagement rate on each platform?
Typical benchmarks vary widely by platform, post format, account size, and industry. As rough guides, average rates often hover around 1% to 3% on Instagram, 1% to 2% on LinkedIn, 0.5% to 1% on Facebook and X, 2% to 4% on YouTube, and 3% to 6% on TikTok. Smaller accounts usually see higher percentage rates than large accounts.
Do saves and shares count toward engagement rate?
Yes. High-value actions like saves and shares indicate strong intent and content utility. On modern algorithms (especially Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn), saves and shares frequently carry more algorithmic weight than passive likes because they signal that someone found the post valuable enough to revisit or distribute.
How can you improve your social media engagement rate?
Focus on clear hooks, prompt meaningful conversation with specific open-ended questions, test formats like short-form video and carousels, and review your top-performing posts to identify what resonates. Replying to comments promptly and cleaning inactive or bot followers can also improve your overall engagement signals.
