Question 1

What are the Google Ads headline and description character limits?

Accepted Answer

In a responsive search ad, each headline can be up to 30 characters and each description up to 90 characters. Spaces and punctuation count. Some languages, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean, use double-width characters that count as two.

Question 2

How many headlines and descriptions can a responsive search ad have?

Accepted Answer

A responsive search ad needs at least 3 headlines and 2 descriptions, and allows up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. Google shows up to 3 headlines and 2 descriptions at a time and tests different combinations to find what performs best.

Question 3

What are the display URL paths in Google Ads?

Accepted Answer

Path 1 and Path 2 are optional text added after your domain in the display URL, for example example.com/shoes/running. Each path can be up to 15 characters. They do not change the landing page; the final URL decides where people go.

Question 4

Why does pinning headlines limit ad combinations?

Accepted Answer

Pinning forces a headline or description into a fixed position, so Google can only rotate the remaining assets. Pinning one headline to position 1 removes every other headline from that slot, which cuts the number of combinations and can lower Ad Strength. Pin only text that must always appear, such as a legal notice.
